How to Prepare Your Testimony

Peter wrote that we should always be “prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15, ESV).
But, are we prepared? Thousands of people across the United States and Canada are getting involved in My Hope  with Billy Graham. Many have spent the last several months building relationships with friends and neighbors. A key component this November, in addition to extending hospitality and viewing a special program, is your own personal faith story, or testimony.
Before you can share it, you have to know it. Taking the time to answer a few questions and prepare will make all the difference.
Every shareable faith story about coming to Christ has three key components:

  1. Before
  2. During
  3. After

What was your life like before Christ? How did you receive Christ? What has your life been like since? You can read through testimonies from Billy Graham, Franklin Graham and Will Graham to help you shape your own story.
Here’s a three-minute plan for telling your story of how Jesus gave you hope and what He’s doing in your life today:

  • 30 seconds: Tell what your life was like before you received Jesus.
  • 30 seconds: Explain what caused you to turn to God.
  • 60 seconds: Share the circumstances of how you received him into your life.
  • 30 seconds: Repeat the prayer you prayed to receive Jesus Christ.
  • 30 seconds: Explain how your life has changed since Jesus became your Lord and Savior.

Set aside time this week to prepare your testimony and practice sharing it. Say it several times out loud in front of a mirror if you want! Pray for God to use it to speak directly to the hearts of your friends and neighbors during the culmination of My Hope Canada in November. And, if you haven’t yet signed up for My Hope Canada, we pray you will do it today! We need your help as we reach our communities, one heart at a time.
