As My Hope staff, we work very hard to make sure that the database works, that the materials are all shipped, that expenses are paid and that we say and do all of the right things to make My Hope Canada align with the ministry of Billy Graham and with the Gospel.
But, will we actually be Matthews? Will we share our faith as My Hope Canada is asking Christians to do around the country? You might assume that—of course we would! But I argue that we can’t share our faith out of obligation. Why do it then? Why open our hearts and make ourselves vulnerable when we truly don’t know what the response will be.
One of our staff members recently shared her story. Her past is heart-breaking and she has endured things that many of us friendly, church-going people, can’t even imagine. She spoke of her plan to share The Cross with her close friends and family. As she spoke, a new perspective on “evangelism” came to light.
You see, her motivation for why she wanted to tell people about Jesus didn’t start with their depravity or their eternal destiny. Instead she was first and foremost motivated by what Jesus had done for HER.
He rescued her from her past.
He saved her from herself.
He sacrificed His life for her, even when she had nothing to give.
He set her free from sin.
He delivered her from death and brokenness.
He pulled her back from the enemy and his lies.
He died for her, so that she could live.
It started with HIM. What HE had done, who HE is and HIS love for her!
Evangelism is a response. We tell people about Jesus because of the overflow of a life that has been ransomed by what Jesus did on the Cross at Calvary.
The story of the 99 and “the 1″ says:
“So he told them this parable:
What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” (Luke 15:3-7 ESV)
He ran after “the 1″, and when “the 1″ was found…he REJOICED!
The reality is, if you have lied or have ever had ANY SPOT of unforgiveness in your heart, welcome to the family of “the 1′s”!
As “the 1′s” we have all been RESCUED and RANSOMED, and I don’t know about you, but I am thankful!
Rescued people live a life full of thankfulness.
The staff member who shared her difficult past is the happiest person in the office. She is so thankful and humble and HAPPY! She says it’s because she’s free. God freed her. She is a new creation.
Let’s remember. Let’s take a minute to remember that someone told us about Jesus. Let’s remember what He did for us. Let’s remember that we are all “the 1″. And… let’s ask for a greater revelation of God’s pursuant love expressed through Jesus Christ. Let’s ask God to give us a new perspective to fuel us as we tell our friends about Jesus—and ALL that He did, and is doing, for us!
Now watch Defining Moments or Lose to Gain or The Cross and text or call the person on your heart to find a time to share it with them.
