The Father, Our Deepest Human Need

By Preston Parrish
The great General Douglas MacArthur once said:
By profession, I am a soldier and take pride in that fact. But I am prouder – infinitely prouder – to be a father…It is my hope that my son, when I am gone, will remember me not from the battle field but in the home repeating with him our simple daily prayer, ‘Our Father who art in Heaven.’
General MacArthur’s words underscore the objective of My Hope with Billy Graham – namely, encouraging and equipping Christians to introduce their family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers to the most important relationship a person can ever have, which is a relationship with our Heavenly Father through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. That is what happens when someone turns from their sins and trusts in Christ:
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).
The Apostle Paul said it this way: “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore” (Galatians 1:3-5).
He also said, “God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Galatians 4:6).
Fatherhood is in severe disrepair – indeed, widespread collapse – in our nation. One researcher recently noted the rise of young men with a lack of purpose, basic social skills, who live off of their parents and attributed it to poor fathering.
Citing “the ‘father factor’ in nearly all of the social issues facing America today, he said that the way to fix this problem isn’t adapting some societal strategy. The “demise of guys,” he said, “is really, at its root, the absence of fathers.”
My Hope with Billy Graham can’t “fix” every individual and family situation that’s been negatively impacted by “the father factor.”
What this effort can do, though, is help everyone know that there is provision for their deepest longings and needs in a relationship with the One who is the Perfect Father … the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ … our Heavenly Father.
Today, will you commit to praying for the fathers you know and that their homes, along with the homes in your own neighborhood, will be built upon the Perfect love of “our Father who art in Heaven” and His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ?
